Are today's college students too connected?

Are today's college students, with all of their cell phones, online tools, networks, twitters, etc. too connected? With today's technology, does the ability of college students to contact their parents--any place, any time--enhance students' maturity or hinder it? The fact that mommy and/or daddy's reassuring voice is just a tweet, text, or button-push away seems like a great way for parents to stay in touch with their children. It also seems like a great way for parents to be able to give their son or daughter support and encouragement as they endeavor off at college. But, at what point are parents too accessible? At what point does this accessibility delay the maturing, decision-making, initiative, and personal responsibility of today's college students. This site (http://news-info.wustl.edu/news/page/normal/14403.html) discusses some of these issues. What do you think?

  2. Well, since no one is following this blog and no one is commenting (on what I believe to be a somewhat interesting topic), I will post a comment. --- My thoughts are the today's college students are probably not TOO connected. Like most things in life, there needs to be balance. So, if students are crying home to Mommy every time there is adversity, then I see that as a bad thing. However, most of the time that is probably not the case. Again, college students who have access to so many friends and family so easily need to have balance. The balance should be kept between accepting responsibility individually and leaning on others for help and support.
